The game can be played from either 3rd-person view or 1st-person view and travelling across the area can be done via foot or vehicle. There are 3 lead characters that players can control and switch between them during or outside a mission. The story is centred at heists and many missions involve shooting and driving. Players when commit crimes may have the law enforcement agencies on their tails depending on the wanted level system used to measure and control the aggression of their response. There is also an online-multiplayer mode named Grand Theft Auto: Online that allows up to 30 players to explore the open world and participate in cooperative or competitive game events.
Nine years after a failed bank robbery in the town of Ludendorff, North Yankton, former bank robber Michael Townley has relocated with his family to Los Santos under a new identity, Michael De Santa. Michael lives a normal yet boring life, until he encounters Franklin Clinton, a gangster seeking to come up in the Los Santos underworld and one day Michael unexpectedly encounters his old friend and the only other survivor of the bank robbery in Ludendorff, Trevor Philips. The three come together to carry out missions one of which is to rob a depository and take tens of millions of dollars worth of gold. The three soon find themselves entangled with some deranged elements of the underworld, the U.S. Government and the entertainment industry and find that they are being used by the corrupt Feds to carry out their own tasks and a number of fights with rival gangs and criminals. Soon, Trevor discovers that Michael is hiding a dark secret from the Ludendorff robbery. Despite these challenges, will the three succeed in one of the biggest robberies of all time?
GTA V is an open-world, action-adventure game that can be played from either 1st person view or 3rd person view (default view). Players complete mission with set objectives to progress throughout the game. Apart from missions, players can roam freely across the whole map of San Andreas from the beginning without any limitations, although story progress unlocks more gameplay content.
Players can use primary weapons such as rifles, secondary weapons such as handguns and tertiary melee weapons to fight enemies and can duck, jump, run, swim or use vehicles to roam across. Auto-aim and cover system have been introduced in combat that can be used as assistance when dealing with enemies. When the health of the players diminishes by taking damage, it regenerates to its halfway point. The players shall respawn at the nearest hospital when they die. The law enforcement agency may start pursuing the players if they commit crimes. The level of pursuit depends on the “wanted” meter in the head-up display (HUD) that measures the current wanted level (5 stars being the max where the pursuit by the law enforcement is the most aggressive).
Law enforcement officers will start searching for players that left the wanted vicinity. The players can position themselves in such situations depending on the line of sight of each law enforcement officer as displayed in the radar (mini map).
The single-player mode lets players control 3 characters: Franklin Clinton, Michael De Santa and Trevor Philips- who get interconnected as they complete missions. Some missions are completed with only one character and some feature 2 or 3. In single-player mode, players may switch between the 3 characters at will. Auto switching of character may take place in single-player missions depending on the objectives. A characters avatar in the compass will flash red if he’s in danger and needs help, and flash white if he has a strategic advantage. Some difficult heist missions require aid from AI-controlled accomplices with unique skill sets like hacking, driving or sharpshooting. If the accomplice survives the heist, he takes his cut from the cash reward and may be available for later missions with improved unique skills.
Each character has their skill in which they expertise by default even though players improve characters’ skill as they play; Franklin good at driving, Trevor good at flying and Michael good at shooting. There’s a special skill assigned to each character that can be invoked at will during missions or outside missions. Franklin can slow down time while driving, useful to avoid crashes when speeding. Michael can enter bullet time in combat. Trevor enters rage mode where he deals twice damage while taking half damage from enemies in combat. This special skill has a meter displayed in each character’s HUD that depletes on usage and regenerates as players perform skilful actions.
There are a couple of activities to engage into while free roaming like off-road biking, BASE jumping, scuba diving, water ski-jet racing. There are lots of vehicles in the game- bicycles, motorbikes, cars and commercial vehicles, boats and submarine, airplanes and helicopters, army vehicles like fighter jets, cargo helicopter and tanks. Cars and motorbikes can be customized at garages like Los Santos Customs where you can upgrade the vehicles engines, suspensions, brakes to tune its performance. Customize the looks of the vehicle by type and colour of paint, adding accessories like custom roof, spoilers, custom exhaust, custom rims, neon lights, headlamps and many more.
There are not many places in the game you can enter as compared with Grand Theft Auto IV and Grand Theft Auto San Andreas; even though properties are available for purchase you can’t enter all of them. Each character has got his personal smartphone for contacting friends, clients, starting activities, taking photos, accessing the in-game internet. The in-game internet has some websites for purchasing vehicles, properties like homes and businesses, upgrading weapons of each character and purchasing outfits. The smartphone also receives notifications via email or sms about new shop outlets, new stuff in shops.
